Abstract

This paper deals with the territorial dimension of elite recruitment in the United Kingdom. Concretely, it focusses on the members of Parliament (MPs) born out of their constituency —the so-called parachute MPs— from 2001 to 2019. Despite social demands for more local candidates, electoral parachutage is far from disappearing. But who are those MPs? As such, this structural phenomenon of British politics must be observed with great attention. To this purpose, this descriptive study analyses British parachute MPs in terms of historical evolution, geographic origins, political parties, territorial anchorage, proximity with the executive, gender, and age through an original dataset. The results point out a stable trend, geographically concentrated in the Midlands and the East of England. Additionally, parachutism seems to be linked to their proximity vis-à-vis the executive power and political parties’ leadership. These factors are essential to secure a strong foothold in their constituencies —and, therefore, the possibility of re-election.
