Abstract

This PhD. dissertation shows, from an empirical perspective, the gap between the perceived value of the performer contributions to the traditional popular music and the treatment that it receives in the market. It applies to the relevant case of flamenco in Spain. The proposed methodology is based on four approaches: an analysis of intellectual property laws to determine the scope of copyright and neighboring rights; interviews with experts to lay out the flamenco work creation process, double system surveys to determine the perceived valuation of its agents and its contributions, and finally, through econometric strategy and a Multidimensional Structural Equations Model, the flamenco work’s perceived value-scale is validated through three dimensions: composition elements, feelings and virtuosity, from which flamenco is created. The results show how the perceived value of flamenco work critically depends on its externalization carried out by the performer through its virtuosity; however, it is not protected by copyright or via royalties, commensurate with its fundamental creative role.
