Abstract

Sports have become a central activity for the quality of life and a remarkable mobilizer of financial resources. This research analyzes the factors associated with the decision to participate in sporting activities in Colombia’s five main cities between 2008 and 2015. With microdata from Colombian households, we estimated two probit models applied to a pseudo-data panel: one for practitioners of physical and sporting activities and one for spectators. Income and time availability, and, especially, structural factors such as gender, stratification, poverty, and social capital explain the wide gaps in access in Colombia’s main cities.
