Abstract

This work aims to analyse the variations of tectonic transport directions associated to shortening structures near the Internal-External Zone boundary of the Ronda transect (western Betics). It focus on Lower to Middle Miocene structu- res belonging to the main deformation event in the fold-and-thrust belt. The Penibetic (External Zones) is deformed by NW vergent folds and shows slickenlines indicating transport sense towards N305º-320ºE. Similar results have been obtained in the Nieves Unit (Internal Zones). In the Alpujarride Complex (Internal Zones), W vergent crenulation folds and upright N-S- folds, indicate a N270º-280ºE tectonic transport direction. The difference (<30º) in tectonic transport directions between the Alpujarride and the Nieves-Penibetic ensemble seems to indicate a general dextral transpression. In this context, the Nieves-Penibetic ensemble could accommodate mainly the orthogonal shortening component whereas the Alpujarride units could accommodate most of the lateral displacement.
