Resumo

We explore the relief rejuvenation recorded in a segment of the Betics foreland (Sierra Morena of Córdoba) by means of geomorphic and structural tools. Our results indicate that the overall WSW-ENE orientation displayed by the abrupt southern escarpment of the Sierra Morena is controlled by steep dipping faults with dominant slip-dip component, most of them uplifting the NW block, though right lateral slip is frequent. Our geomorphic analysis, including geomorphic indexes, indicates a quaternary tectonic activity of these faults. Faulting would be also responsible for both N-S relief seg- mentation and local NW-ward tilting of the foreland paleosurface, as well as for the uplifting of marine Neogene deposits of the Guadalquivir foreland basin. The kinematic features of faults point to the superposition of forebulge flexural bending and intraplate deformation associated to the Betics deformation front.
