Abstract

Part of the current political construction of housework must be historically contextualized in the emergency of the nuclear proletarian family and domes- tic work in the last decades of the 19 th century and the first decades of the 20 thcentury, when the concept of family wage controlled reproductive work. In order to understand the contemporary lack of rights for domestic workers we need to look at the symbiotic relationship between “domestic work” and “mod- ern woman”. Today more than ever the “modern woman” needs “domestic workers” to keep this archetype alive. Through a feminist perspective this text analyzes the political and legal discourses which, under women’s “protection- ist” legislation of these years, denied many domestic workers of their labour rights
