Abstract

There are several reasons for expressing reality in a different and embellished way. These include, for example, the intention not to cause discomfort and the desire to disguise reality, even if only linguistically. Euphemisms played such an important role in the jargon of the economic and financial crisis that it is impossible to imagine the press without expressions such as recortes or Sparmaßnahmen, since both political and economic discourse are permeated by these lexical resources. The aim of this article is to analyse the euphemisms of the economic and financial crisis in the German and Spanish specialized press, using a text corpus of articles from publications such as Handelsblatt, Expansión and Cinco Días between 2007 and 2016. Our goal is to learn how both lan-guages use this resource and, ultimately, to understand the differences and similarities between these two working languages.
