Abstract

In this article, we survey various groups of late-medieval mulieres religiosae from the Kingdom of Seville and their connections with members of the religious orders. In recent years, research on this topic has multiplied but analysis has been made predominantly from an institutional perspective. Drawing on the official records of Notaries Public preserved in the Archivo Histórico Provincial de Sevilla and the Archivo Municipal de Jerez de la Frontera, this paper instead explores the establishment of specific connections between mulieres religiosae and a number of monasteries and convents. We argue that such connections allowed these women to maintain their own lives without needing to enter enclosed environments.
