Abstract

Based on a comment made by Kant about Mme. du Chatêlet, we analyse the scientific arguments wielded to contend that their biological sex made women incapable of rationality. Establishing the inability of women to engage in science, ethics, and politics was a goal some Enlightenment authors. We conclude by pointing to vestiges of this way of thinking in contemporary thought based on Ortega y Gasset's studies On Love.
