Abstract
Until the second half of the 20th century, our knowledge of Roman settlements on the Lusitanian south coast was based primarily on the research and excavations led by S. P. M. Estacio da Veiga in the previous century. Due to the intensification of archaeological research in the Portuguese Algarve, we have been able to increase significantly our understanding of this area. A series of rescue as well as planned research excavations have enabled the in-depth description of several inland settlements, as well as of ancient harbour cities—in particular Balsa, Ossonoba, Portus Hannibalis, and Lacobriga. With help of several case studies, mainly from the territory of ancient Ossonoba (Faro), it will be attempt here a characterization of settlement patterns in Roman Lusitania: the simple farm house (Marmeleiros), the classical villae rusticae (Milreu), the mansiones (Monta da Nora) and the fishing villages (Cerro da Vila) described as secondary agglomeration.
