Abstract

The perception of self can be altered in light of radical contextual changes, such as the migratory experience. When the category "Muslim" is perceived as essential for the construction of identity, willingly or by imposition, but individuals do not feel represented by the community to which they have been told to belong, strategies for reinterpreting Islam and its religious practice emerge to adapt themselves to the social reality that stigmatizes them. Through an Ethnography in Badajoz, we discover the different positions regarding the perception of religious freedom by a sector of the Muslim population, which is invisible to the public authorities for not following the ideological line defended by the representation of Badajoz's Muslim community, which canalize the dialogue between this community and the competent authorities.
