Abstract

In recent years, there has been a real inflation of terms that allude to the cognitive aspect of conflicts. A common mistake is to use the words disinformation and influence operations as synonymous concepts. The problem lies in the fact that while disinformation tactics are ethically reprehensible and are the natural terrain of action for autocratic powers, influence operations are a legitimate space for democratic actors to promote their interests among external audiences. This paper analyzes what is the doctrinal germ of both concepts and what are the points of connection between both methodologies.
