Résumé

In this article we set out two objectives of analysis. The first part is a comparative analysis of the main characteristics of the labour markets of a group of 28 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. To this end, we use a set of indicators on the functioning and structure of the labour market in these countries to identify the main differences and similarities in order to subsequently produce a descriptive typology of the general structure of labour markets. In the second part, the cases of Argentina and Chile are studied with the aim of applying a proposed analysis model from the perspective of labour market segmentation and structural heterogeneity to explain the processes of social inequality that occur in the labour sphere. A general hypothesis is formulated according to which, despite differences in economic structures, social models, and degrees of development, with specific institutional frameworks and sociohistorical processes, common dynamics can be observed in the structures of capitalist labour markets. Using equivalent databases on the labour force in each country and harmonising the information for comparative analysis, we will construct a typology of employment segmentation in each country that shows the similarities in the structuring of the labour market and its expression in terms of employment and social conditions of inequality.
