Abstract

The new building was to house the pious work created in 1500 by Catalina de Ribera and that her son, Don Fadrique Enríquez de Ribera, had promoted in compliance with his mother's will. Thus, with the income produced by the goods bequeathed to the Hospital by the founders, and while it still remained within the city walls in the old and increasingly unhealthy building of the Santa Catalina collation, outside the wall, in its northern sector , the employers arranged for the works to begin on the new lot acquired for this purpose, a place they called de la Macarena, in front of the door of the same name, which according to tradition was the one that corresponded to the Huerta Macario, hence the name of the Virgin Macarena.
