Private Military Companies (PMCs) and Private Security Companies (PSCs) have proliferated since the end of the Cold War, but it is now that most focus is being placed on one particular group, the Wagner Group, as a proxy company for the Russian Federation. The Wagner Group is deployed in several African countries, as well as Chinese companies, where the European Union also has economic and counter-terrorism interests, in the framework of its training missions (EUTM). This article analyses how the deployment of security companies linked to rival countries in Mozambique, Central African Republic, and Mali (along with Burkina Faso and Senegal) affects EU interests and concludes with recommendations for the development of a new security concept for EU interests.
