Abstract

This paper sets out a new view of the so-called popular religiosity or commonreligion experienced in Andalusia but bearing little relationship with the religion propoundedby the ecclesiastic hierarchy. Nevertheless, it is argued that the disseminating activity of thereligious orders has been a determinant in the conception, practice and rituals of the commonreligiousness of Andalusians under the Ancien Régime and up until the present day. This pro-posal is supported by a certain amount of detail with regard to devotions, especially the Marianadvocations disseminated by the religious orders and the brotherhoods and confraternities.
