Abstract

The impact of the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 on the political, social and economic life of America was very important. The high number of Spanish emigrants in the continent, as well as the economic, social, academic and political bonds were strong. The repercussions were specially obvious in the Spanish-speaking countries, although they were also present in the USA, Brazil and Canada. From the first moment all the American political actors rushed to take some kind of attitude towards the Spanish conflict. These positions were very varied; from those clearly marked towards the support of one of the contending parties to those of apparent or calculated neutrality. Likewise, the end of the Spanish Civil War and the consolidation of the Franco regime, in the first hand in the context of the Second World War and later in the Cold War scene, determined relations between Spain and the American nations. In this work we review some of the most recent contributions in this regard and offer some interpretative keys that help to introduce the status of the issue. Keywords: Falange, Francoism, America, Hispanity, Nazism, Fascism.
