Abstract

The digital transformation of postgraduate education for ubiquitous learning has generated the need for the academic use of the smartphone. Therefore, the objectives of the work were: 1) to characterize the profile of academic use of the smartphoneperceived by Ecuadorian postgraduate students in the field of education from a university on the Costa and one in the Sierra; 2) to compare the results obtained regarding the academic use of the smartphoneaccording to the university of origin. A descriptive study was conducted with a quantitative methodological approach using a non-experimental cross-sectional causal comparative design, applying an adapted version of the “Smartphone and University Questionnaire. Student Perspective” to an incidental sample of 415 students. The results showed frequent use of the smartphonefor academic purposes, as a tool for academic management and organization, quick information search and communication with classmates and teachers, who do not usually motivate its use in the classroom, which is why they expressed having learned to use it in a self-taught way. The comparative study showed significant differences between the students’ perceptions, highlighting the teacher’s encouragement to use the smartphonein practical activities in class and theoretical explanations by those from the Costa region
