Résumé

The article starts by considering the importance of the Rentas Mínimas de Inserción (RMI) as the last link in the social protection system in the fight against poverty. An analysis of the RMI is presented based on 22 interviews with beneficiaries of this benefit in three Social Services Centres in Andalusia. Compared to existing works, the use of Iramuteq software allows us to go deeper into the semantic structure of the discourse and the most relevant themes and to elaborate a typology by means of word count, while complementing it with the verbatims of the interviewees. The results obtained reflect a permanent justification of the financial aid received, the “deservedness” of the benefit, who are the recipients who really deserve it and who do not, the family as the main support network and the difficulties they have in accessing the world of work in a digitalised society that generates a new factor of social exclusion. From a gender perspective, there is evidence of an ingrained cognitive framework in which women assume the role of carer of the home and family and men the role of job seeker. In situations of vulnerability such as the ones analysed here, women are the ones who are actively involved in the search for solutions and in the elaboration of strategies for “survival”.
