Abstract

During the last restoration of two large Murillo’s paintings, several studies on materialsapplied were carried out. A variety of analytical techniques were used, such as visible and UV light,IRR, MA-XRF, XRF, SEM-EDX and GC-MS with the principal aim to identify different components ofboth paintings (preparation layer, pigments, binders). In the present work, the methods used duringthis study will be explained, with the special focus on the mobile equipment MA-XRF, which offersreal time elemental images of the paintings. The results show that the preparation was carried outin two layers as a mixture of calcite, earths and lead white, as usual for the artist. The polychromyis made of lead white mixed with different pigments: red and yellow earths, vermilion, azurite, smalt, lead-tin yellow, umber, and carbon black. MA-XRF mapping revealed special distribution andcombination of these pigments along the surface on both paintings.
