Abstract

In this paper we address this issue from the actions that the Holy Office of the Inquisition of the Canary Islands took against ecclesiastics for actions that we can consider enlightened, therefore, the main source that we use, on this occasion, arethe records of the processes of the Holy Office that were they are almost entirely deposited in the Canarian Museum, in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The enlightened critics of the Inquisition mixed royalist and ideological arguments. The Holy Office of the Inquisition was one of the instruments for the defense of the most papist groups, against state secularism and against the modernization of the Catholic Church. The church was one of the bases of the Old Regime, as an institution it showed a frontal opposition to the Enlightenment, although some of its members opted for some modernizing reforms, even in ecclesiastical matters.
