Resum
This article describes the process of discovery and investigation of the amphitheatre, the site of which occupied a privileged suburban space on the coast of Tarragona. The patronage of the Bryant Foundation made it possible to accelerate the excavation of a monumental complex, where a public show building became a religious space and, finally, a provincial prison. The excavations of the mid-20th century protected the site from urban speculation in the city and were the beginning of an archaeological investigation process that has not yet been completed. This period arquerevealsthe methodological development of our discipline and, at the same time, the inherent tensions in Heritage management of a historical city in constant change. In this context, political and institutional strategies intervened, but also the different personalities of the generations of archaeologists involved.
