Abstract

This ex post facto study analyzes, from the social-cognitive point of view of the goal achievement perspective, the relationship among the motivational climate, goal orientations and behavioral patterns of healthy lifestyles (i.e., practicing sports as extra-curricular activity, as well as maintaining a balanced nutrition, respecting regular meal schedules and having adequate resting habits) of 402 physical education students between the ages of 14 and 18. For this purpose, the structural equation methodology was applied. The results indicate that the task orientation and the perception of the motivational climate task involvement predict positively the practice of extracurricular sport activities. Additionally, the practice of such extracurricular activities predicts positively, and is a significant factor in forecasting healthy nutritional habits and the respect for regular meal schedules, as well as resting patters, although the latter is not statistically significant. Therefore, the practice of physical education and extracurricular sport activities become mediators between the motivational climate related to the task and the individuals’ healthy habits, being this association consistent with the theoretical perspective of Goal Achievement.
