Abstract

The aim of this paper is to explain the process whereby Social Work as a profes- sion has matured, based on the National Congresses and Professional Conventions (2) held in Spain within the sphere of Social Work from 1968 to the present day. The article focuses on socio-historical moments prior and subsequent to the country’s transition to democracy, as well as the influence of political and social action on these events. On the basis of these premises, the research questions/aims tackled are as follows: what are the different stages of contemporary Social Work in Spain? What has been the impact of the socio-political circumstances in the second half of the 20th Century on the professionalization of Social Work in Spain? Which variables de- fine the theoretical/epistemological and normative/identificatory advances made in the development of a burgeoning sphere of Social Work? Qualitative analysis of the contributions made in the proceedings of such events points to the following stages in the development of contemporary Social Work in Spain: gestation, ideological, te- chnical/ideological, and professionalization.
