Abstract

In this paper the relationships established between human beings and their environment from proverbs and rural-oriented practices are analysed. Linkages between rural groups and their environment cannot be understood dichotomously, where «nature» appears in opposition to the human practices that act upon it. On the contrary, referring to the fields of southwest Extremadura involves referring to socio-ecological areas in which tissue-specific relationships go beyond the human relationships. These include, in some of the specific collective ideologies, non-human elements of the environment. The double meaning of proverbs allows us to create an original union of intersubjectivities in spaces called «natural». The study of a selection of proverbs concerning agricultural activities in certain months, will allow observing that the oral speech has existed for centuries as one of the main characteristics of agriculture and animal husbandry.
