Abstract

The retroquire of the cathedral of Burgos is one of the most spectacular examples that can be admired in the Spanish cathedrals, due to the great Passionist sculptural program with which it was endowed in two very different moments. Halfway between Gothic and Renaissance, Felipe Bigarny made three great panels between 1498 and 1500, on which he depicted the Way to Calvary, the Crucifixion and the Descent with the Resurrection and the Appearance of Christ to his Mother. A century and a half later, Archbishop Peralta wanted to enrich the ensemble and commissioned the sculptor Pedro Alonso de los Ríos another two great scenes: the Agony in the Garden and the Ascension, both made between 1679 and 1682.
