Doctor by the Universidad de Sevilla with the thesis Análisis contrastivo pragmático y conversacional de las secuencias de cierre de conversaciones telefónicas en inglés americano y español peninsular 2002. Supervised by Dr. Pilar Garcés Conejos.
Lucía Fernández-Amaya is associate professor of English at the Department of Philology and Translation, Pablo de Olavide University, Seville. She teaches English as a foreign language (Master's Degree in Bilingual Education) and “Intercultural Competence“ (Master’s Degree in International Communication, Translation and Interpretation). She holds a Ph.D. in English Linguistics from the University of Seville. Her research interests and publications focus on pragmatics and translation, sociopragmatics (politeness), interlanguage and cross-cultural pragmatics, discourse analysis, teaching pragmatics to ESL learners, the language of service encounters and digital communication. She was Head of the Research Group Service Encounters, Tourism and Intercultural Communication (SETIC) and member of the Andalusian Government-funded Research Group Intercultural Pragmatic Studies (English-Spanish): Pragmatic and Discourse Aspects (PAI HUM-640). Among its activities, this Research Group organises EPICS, an international biennial conference held in Seville.
