Abstract
This work is the result of an investigation conducted with a group of 1st year undergraduate students reading Translation and Interpretation at Pablo de Olavide University (Sevilla). Having found that students do not come into our classrooms with the necessary proficiency in academic discourse in Spanish (their L1), we developed a specific training seminar focused on this competence. The results of the work showed that only 6 % of the students had received training in oral academic discourse in their L1, but 97 % had had to give an academic presentation (which was part of the evaluation criteria of the subjects) previously.
