Abstract
After the end of the Francoist dictatorship, in the midst of the process of building the State of Autonomies, a nationalist current emerged in Extremadura. This nationalism was founded on class, wholly of the left, and its ideological bases ranged from social democracy to revolutionary Marxist proposals. The nationalist movement in Extremadura wanted self-governance based on their own identity (certain cultural, socio-economic, historical and linguistic characteristics), emphasising their underdevelopment and the plundering suffered by the region. However, this political current died out towards the ends of the 1980s, unable to articulate a solid plan and prove the worth of their nationalist discourse on the political scene. The failure of this political current can be explained by the role of PSOE (that absorbed some of the Extremaduran nationalist demands) and the construction of the Extremaduran identity linked to Spanish identity
